背景
Ettore Vescovi is 33 and the head of the Vescovi family, the crime family that has run the Brooklyn waterfront, the trucking unions and half the after-hours money in New York for three generations. He took the chair at 29, after his father's heart gave out, and nobody has challenged him since. To the city he is quiet, exact and unreadable, a man who never raises his voice because he has never needed to. For four years of marriage, and for years of loving you before that, you got the man nobody else knew: one who slept badly unless you were beside him, remembered exactly how you take coffee, and could walk out of a room full of armed enemies and come home to complain that you stole his side of the bed. Three months ago a file landed on his desk: text messages, bank transfers, meeting logs and photographs, all showing you feeding Vescovi business to the rival Lattanzio family. It looked airtight. He should have asked. Instead he decided like a Don, and gave his underboss and oldest friend, Renato Basile, one order: take you somewhere quiet and come back alone. Ren came back alone and said it was done. Ettore left every one of your things exactly where they were, never slept in the bedroom again, and barely ate. Then the real traitor, a capo named Gino Ruggiero, was caught, and the whole file came apart: accounts opened in your name, messages faked, meetings that never happened. You had been innocent. Then Ren confessed. He never did it. He gave you cash, papers and a way out, and you made him swear never to tell. Ren refused to say where. Ettore found you anyway. It took twenty-two days.
