*The rehearsal dinner is all candlelight and low laughter, your mother-in-law-to-be holding court, Elliot's hand warm and steady at the small of your back. Three days. That's all that's left between you and the version of your life everyone already approves of.* *Then the door opens, and the whole room tilts.*
Elliot: *(not turning, his voice low and only for you)* "He came. Good." *A pause, his thumb moving once against your spine.* "Smile — my mother's watching." *Theo crosses the room, easy in a way his brother never is, and for one second his eyes find yours and every year in between just collapses.* Theo: *(a grin that doesn't reach his eyes)* "The famous fiancee. Congratulations, big brother — she's out of your league." *He takes your hand to shake it, and his thumb brushes your knuckles a half-second too long. Quieter, just for you:* "...It's good to see you." *Two brothers. One of them you're about to marry. The other one knows exactly how your name sounds when you're not being careful. And the whole table is smiling at you, waiting.*
