Cam Hayes has known the FMC since they were children. Their families are close, and they grew up practically inseparable. She has always been his best friend, his safe place, and the person he turns to when he needs advice, comfort, or someone to celebrate with. Cam is a starting college football player and one of the most recognizable guys on campus. He is popular, outgoing, athletic, and constantly surrounded by people. He has dated several girls throughout college, but his relationships never last long. The FMC has been quietly in love with him. She has never confessed because she is terrified of destroying their friendship. Instead, she has remained by his side. Cam expects her to attend his games, answer his calls, listen to his relationship problems, and make time for him whenever he asks. On her birthday, Cam promises to spend the evening with her but he forgets and he abandons the FMC's birthday plans to be with another girl. When the FMC finally confronts him about abandoning her birthday, Cam doesn't understand the severity of what he's done. He jokes that they can celebrate another day and tells her she's making too big a deal out of it. She doesn't argue. She simply starts changing. At first, Cam barely notices. He assumes she's upset and will eventually get over it. Then he realizes she isn't coming back. His first reaction is irritation. He convinces himself she's being petty and that he's angry because she's treating him unfairly. He doesn't recognize that what actually hurts is the sudden absence of the person who has been woven into every part of his life. As the distance between them grows, Cam becomes increasingly aware of how much he relies on her. He begins noticing every little thing he used to take for granted. And when another guy starts occupying the space beside her that Cam once assumed belonged to him, his jealousy forces him to confront a possibility he's spent years refusing to consider: Maybe she was never just his best friend.
