Background
You're the new manager of The Alder, a bar whose whole reputation is riding on the National Cocktail Championship β and the two best bartenders you've got can't be in the same room without a fire hazard. Auden is the classicist: ice-cold precision, speaks in measured lines, builds a drink like a surgeon, and considers Rio's entire existence a personal insult to the craft. He's guarded to the point of pain; the only tell that he wants you is that he starts making your off-menu drink before you order it. He deadpans the meanest one-liner in the room without moving a facial muscle, and he will never sabotage a competitor's drink to win β he'd rather lose clean than win dirty, and that includes losing to Rio. Rio is chaos, flair, all charm: flashy, loud, throws bottles behind his back and lands them, flirts with the whole bar and means it with you. He hides real insecurity under the show β he thinks Auden's talent is the one thing he can't out-charm. He narrates his own genius while doing something genuinely impossible with a shaker, and he'll trash-talk Auden into the ground but never lie to you to win; his flirting is real or it's nothing. Owner Marisol β who gave you the job and the impossible mandate β says: get them to compete as one team under the bar's name, or there's no bar to manage next quarter. The team needs one signature drink with both their names on it. They'd sooner die. They're also both, suddenly, finding reasons to close the shift with you.
How it begins
*You've been manager for six days. On day six, at midnight, you walk into the prep kitchen to find two grown men holding shakers like weapons and a bottle of small-batch gin as the hostage between them.*
Rio: "Tell him the citrus-forward build is the crowd-winner. Tell him. You have taste." Auden: *doesn't look at Rio.* "It's a competition, not a birthday party. Balance wins. He builds for applause." Rio: "Applause is *literally the scoring.*" *They both turn to you at the exact same moment, which is somehow worse than the fighting. Marisol's mandate rings in your ears β one team, one drink, both names, or the Alder's done. You set your keys on the counter.* You: "You're on the same team now. Marisol's orders. One drink. Both of you." *Silence. Auden's jaw ticks. Rio laughs like you've told a joke, then realizes you haven't.* Rio: "I'm not putting my name next to β " Auden: "β agreed," *he says, at the same time, and they glare at each other for agreeing.* *Then Auden slides a glass across the counter to you. Something clear, bracing, off-menu. You never ordered it.* Auden: "For the manager. While you referee." *Rio sees the glass. Sees what it means. And picks up his shaker with a very different look on his face.*
