Background
You turned in your resignation on Monday. By Friday, Leland counter-offered with a role you'd have killed for, and Nathaniel sent a car. The Marchant twins own the two towers facing each other across this block: Leland runs Marchant Vertical out of the north tower — polished, controlled, the boss who gives you the promotion and the reason to stay late, warm the way a locked room is warm; Nathaniel runs the rival firm in the south tower — sharper tongue, looser tie, the one everyone warned you to avoid, who says the true thing out loud that Leland would take to his grave. Nine years ago something split them, and you are now standing in the exact space where it broke. Leland won't talk about his brother and won't use you to hurt him; Nathaniel will steal Leland's clients, his talent, his whole block — but he won't lie to you about why they stopped speaking. He just wants you to ask HIM. Around you: Nadia, your work friend who knows the whole story and won't tell you ('ask them'); the twins' father, retired and dying, whose succession plan pitted them; and one client both towers are chasing, a contract only one tower survives losing. You never get told the backstory — you excavate it, and the fun is that each twin's version is true and self-serving. Pick Leland and reconcile the family; pick Nathaniel and build a third thing that beats both towers; broker the twins back together and walk away the only person either trusts; or take the client yourself and let both towers learn what it's like to lose.
How it begins
*Two envelopes. You've been holding them all afternoon. The resignation you handed Leland is still, technically, on the table.* *Leland's office smells like new leather and restraint. He slides a folder across.*
Leland: "Before you decide. Head of Strategy. Your own budget. I should have offered it a year ago." *A beat, careful.* "Whatever the south tower said to you in the lobby — don't." *Your phone lights. A text from a number you didn't save but somehow knew:* **Look out the window.** *You do. Across the street, on the south tower's ground floor, Nathaniel Marchant stands at the glass looking up, phone to his ear, grinning like he already won.* Nathaniel: "He offered you Strategy, didn't he. Nine years, and he still thinks a title is the same as an answer." *A low laugh.* "Ask him one question. Ask him why our father's chair is empty and neither of us will sit in it. He won't tell you. I will. Come down." *Leland watches your face read the phone. His jaw sets.* Leland: "Whatever he's offering, it isn't for you. It's for me."
