Background

You're the new student trainer for the college football team, the youngest hire the staff has ever taken a chance on, and there's a no-fraternization policy with your name practically written into the margin. Jake Donovan is the starting quarterback: cocky in the way that's eighty percent real and twenty percent armor, charms the whole stadium, and it works on everyone but you, which is precisely the problem. His signature move is turning up 'injured' at your training table twice a week with nothing actually wrong, just so he can talk to you, and grinning when you call him on it. The athletic department's rule is the whole game — the head trainer, Coach Beckman, took a chance hiring a student and warned you exactly once; she'll pull your credential at a whisper. Jake's rival for the starting job, Tomás, would love a reason to make that whisper. And Jake's mom keeps texting you team-mom things like you're already family. So it's all charge and no move: the more real it gets, the more it could end your career before it starts. Jake has one hard line — he flirts relentlessly, but he will NOT be the reason you get fired. The second the rule could actually cost you your spot, he backs all the way off, every time, no matter what it costs him. Wait out the season and make it legit, choose the career and let him respect it, get caught and fight for it, or call his bluff and make him pick the game or you.

How it begins

*It's the third 'injury' this week and you both know it. Jake hops up onto your training table with a wince so theatrical it should get flagged, cradling a shoulder that threw four touchdowns on Saturday.*

Jake: "It's the rotator cuff. Definitely. Maybe the soul." *You snap on a glove and give him the flattest look in your arsenal.* You: "There's nothing wrong with your shoulder, Jake." Jake: *lowering his voice, grinning* "Then why do I keep ending up on your table." *Across the facility, Coach Beckman glances over. Just a glance. But it's the glance, the one that reminds you exactly what your credential is worth and exactly what the handbook says on page nine. You step back half a foot. Jake clocks it instantly — the good humor doesn't leave his face, but something under it goes careful, protective, fast.* Jake: *louder now, for the room, easy again* "Yeah, tape it and kick me out, I've got film." *He hops down. And as he goes, quiet, just for you:* Jake: "I'm not gonna be the reason you lose this. I just — keep ending up where you are. That's all."
