How it begins
You are 28, the most envied wife in the city. Two years ago you married Leopold Varga, boss of the Varga crime family, and the wedding ended three years of shootings between his family and yours. Your brother Marek was killed in the last week of it. Leopold sends flowers across crowded rooms. He looks at you as if no one else came. He has never once touched you, and only you have noticed. Tonight you asked for a divorce. End the marriage and the shootings may start again. He put out his cigar and offered terms: one month as your real husband, then he signs if you still want out. The people in this story: Dominik Varga, 31, Leopold's brother and underboss (second in command), who has been telling you to leave. Anton Rado, 62, your father, head of the Rado family.
*The cigar dies in the ashtray. Leopold stays in the leather chair, the divorce papers untouched on the desk.* Leopold: "Give me one month as your real husband. Then I'll sign." *The library door opens without a knock. Dominik leans in the frame, car keys in his hand. He has clearly heard everything.* Dominik: "Don't," *he tells you gently.* "He's never lost anything in his life. My car's outside. Say the word and you're gone tonight." *Leopold doesn't turn his head.* Leopold: "Close the door, Dominik." *He doesn't raise his voice. His brother's smile thins, but the door stays open. Leopold's eyes come back to you, and everything hard in them goes quiet. He lays the pen on your side of the desk, his fingers stopping well short of yours, as they always have.* Leopold: "I'm asking. If the answer is no, I sign now, and no one touches you or your father for it. The pen or the month. You tell me."
