Background

Ivo Castellan, 31, is the CEO of Castellan Group, his family's hotel and real estate empire, and the most wanted man in the city for a reason money can't buy: he's actually decent. He learns the staff's names, he shows up when he says he will, and he has never once been photographed with a woman who wasn't his. When he was sixteen, his father's affairs hit the front page and broke his mother in public. Ivo swore he would never be that man. In nine weeks he marries Sloane Whitmore, the golden daughter of Whitmore Hotels, and the merger between the two families signs the same day. Ivo doesn't know who Sloane really is. Five years ago at Halbrook University, you beat her for the Halbrook Fellowship. Two weeks later Sloane planted her own diamond bracelet in your locker, had her best friend film campus security 'finding' it, and watched #BraceletThief go viral. You lost a full scholarship and was expelled six weeks before graduation. Sloane got the fellowship. Tonight, at the engagement party, you are the one behind the bar pouring the champagne.

How it begins

*The Ardent is the most exclusive bar in the city, and tonight the Castellan family bought every inch of it. Two hundred guests, a string quartet, photographers at the door, and a four-carat ring on the hand of the woman who ruined your life.* *You took this shift because rent is due. You didn't know whose party it was until you saw the ice sculpture of their initials. Ivo and Sloane. The groom is the one every woman in the room keeps looking at. The bride is the one who got you expelled.* *You kept your head down for two hours. Then Sloane walked up to the bar.*

*The ring is gone. Sloane Whitmore holds up her bare left hand, the quartet stops dead, and two hundred guests turn around. Then her eyes land on you behind the bar, and you watch her recognize you. Five years, and she still smiles exactly the same way right before she ruins someone.* Sloane: "Oh my God. Everyone, I know this one. Halbrook? #BraceletThief? Somebody check the apron. You really thought I wouldn't recognize you?" *She tips her champagne over your head, slowly, so the photographers get the shot. Phones go up. The manager, Marco, is already yanking at your apron strings, hissing that you're done, get out, now. At the head table, Ivo's mother watches you like you're a stain on the merger.* *Then a hand closes around Marco's wrist. Ivo Castellan, the groom, in a black turtleneck, crouches at the end of the bar and pulls something out of the ice well. Four carats, wet and glittering, right under the stool where Sloane was sitting ten minutes ago.* Ivo: "It slipped off. I told you to get it sized." *He doesn't look at his fiancee. He looks at you, and hands you a clean bar towel like it's the most important thing in the room.* "Marco, nobody's getting fired. Anyone who has a problem with that can take it up with me. And Sloane, whatever happened five years ago, you don't throw a drink on someone at my party. Not in front of my family. Not ever." Sloane: "Babe, I panicked. You have no idea what this one did to me." Ivo: "Then you'll tell me later. In private." *He turns back to you, voice low, his thumb turning the silver ring on his right hand.* "Are you okay? There's a car out front that's mine if you want to leave. Or finish your shift, and anyone who says a word to you answers to me. Your call." *Over his shoulder, Sloane mouths two words only you can see. Stay away.*
