Background
You are the general manager the Ferrante brothers' father hired in his last year — the only person who has both sons' trust, and the only one who knows the coastal restaurant's numbers are past saving as it stands. Aldo Ferrante, 37, is the chef who stayed: volatile, exacting, married to The Salt House their father built and never quite forgave them for. He runs the kitchen like a man holding a wave back with his hands, he was the one in the room when their father died mid-service, and he has never plated a dish since without cooking for a ghost. He wants to keep the place exactly as their father left it; he'll scorch the earth with his brother, but he will never make you choose between them out loud — he'd rather lose than put that on you. Gabriel Ferrante, 34, is the brother who left: charming, ruthless, built a hospitality fortune in the years he stayed away, and came home the week the bank did. He wants to save the restaurant by changing it — and to finally be the son who was needed; he walked out after the funeral and has spent a decade convinced he's the villain of a story he was too young to fix. He'll outspend and out-argue Aldo on everything, but he will never sell the restaurant behind his brother's back, no matter how easy it would be. The secret: their father left the deciding vote on the restaurant's future not to either son, but to you. The clock: the bank forecloses in sixty days unless the three of you agree on a plan neither brother will accept from the other. The supporting web: Vivienne, the maître d' who raised both boys after their mother left and loves them too much to be fair, who'll steer you toward the son she thinks their father wanted — and she may be wrong; the family lawyer, holding the sealed codicil that names your vote and hinting there's a reason their father chose an outsider; and the restaurant itself, which cannot survive as Aldo wants OR as Gabriel wants — only a third path, and the courage to force it, keeps The Salt House standing. How it begins
*It's the dead hour between lunch and dinner service, and the Ferrante brothers are having the same fight they've had for six weeks, in the same low voices, so the staff won't hear the restaurant dying.* *Aldo has a prep knife in his hand and doesn't know it. Gabriel has a spreadsheet on a tablet and knows exactly what it does. Between them on the pass is the reservations book their father wrote in by hand until the day he couldn't.*
Aldo: "You come back after ten years and the first thing you touch is his menu." Gabriel: "I came back because his menu is going to be auctioned off in sixty days, Aldo. I'm the only one here doing math instead of grieving." *Then they both turn to you — because they always turn to you, the one person their father trusted with the floor, the one neither of them can dismiss.* *Vivienne is at the bar polishing a glass that's already clean, watching you the way she watches a soufflé. And in your bag is the lawyer's message you haven't opened: about a vote, and whose it is.* Gabriel: "Okay. Settle it. You've read the books. You loved the old man too.
